This month’s supplier comparison.

How it usually works

Supplier quality lives in the memory of whoever complained

The nonconformance is filled out by hand; at year end nobody knows how much was rework and how much was scrap.

The caliper’s calibration expires and nobody finds out until the audit — along with forty other instruments.

With the module

Ratings with a source, and documents that hold up in the audit

  • Receiving feeds the score
  • What fails becomes a nonconformance
  • The final inspection pulls the right plan on its own
  • At month end, two reports
What quality keeps under control

For the supplier

  • Index by supplier, month by month, as a continuous series
  • Minimum index by profile, with a meets / doesn’t meet status
  • Validation of new suppliers: certification body, questionnaire and certificates
  • A separate index for service suppliers

For the part

  • Control plan by customer and part, and by material at receiving
  • Specifications with a class: critical, significant, major or minor
  • Receiving inspection with a checklist, attachment and verdict
  • Final inspection releasing the order by quantity

For the organization

  • Nonconformances with criticality, deadline and corrective action
  • Automatic classification as scrap, rework, accepted or repair
  • Metrology: instrument, frequency, deviation and next calibration
  • Development review, with sample validation

Talks to Inventory, Purchasing, Projects, Production, and Engineering.

FAQ

Type your question and press Enter: the answer opens right below, in the list.

My quality form is audited. I can’t change its layout.

And it doesn’t change. Your company’s approved form is kept exactly as it is. When what you need is to compare suppliers, the answer is a separate report — the comparison.

Will the index match the number I already use?

The calculation is the average of the four percentages over the month’s deliveries, and wherever there is already recorded history, it is respected, not recalculated.

The invoice doesn’t show up for inspection.

Almost always the check on that invoice wasn’t finished in the stockroom — or it came in through a path that doesn’t create inventory. There is a procedure to reopen it.

Each of my customers asks for a different control plan.

The plan is by customer and part, with its own specifications and attachments. The final inspection pulls the right plan on its own and locks it, so the inspector can’t pick the wrong one.

My instruments already have codes and years of history.

The records work on top of the data you already have — some customers have more than two thousand instruments — editing field by field, without rewriting the whole line.

Does this include statistical process control?

Control charts aren’t part of it. What exists is expected versus achieved capability within the development review.
